How does Apple Uniprim Powder for Horses work?
In horses who require a strong systemic antibacterial therapy to fight sensitive pathogens, trimethoprim and sulfadiazine are effective. Trimethoprim prevents bacteria from producing tetrahydrofolic acid. It binds to dihydrofolate reductase and inhibits it in a reversible manner. Since it competes with para-aminobenzoic acid, sulfadiazine prevents bacteria from producing dihydrofolic acid. These two medicines work together to "double down" on bacterial metabolism. They starve bacteria of the nucleic acids and proteins they require to multiply and survive. Uniprim is very antibacterial and bactericidal in many cases.
